Design Review References
Things to remember/consider for your design reviews:
- Provide a courteous invitation to your sponsor, noting that it is not requred, but they are welcome to attend
- Provide directions and give the instructor a heads-up of who you think may be attending (so I can have them a parking pass)
- Your electronic Design History File (DHF) should be completed up to date for every design review, includeing deliverables and your presentation in PDF format
- There could be questions during your talk, prior to, or after the presentations and you want to be prepared to show your DHF
- Specifics on turning in deliverables and obtaining signatures are detailed on the Deliverable and Assignment Turn In References page
- Bring in your lab Notebook such that you can take notes during the design review
- Note: the notebook should be left in the lab after the design review such that the TA can take them for grading
- Notebooks should be available in the lab for the TA to take from the end of the Design Review and until the next class session
- Be sure to complete an Individual Team Evaluation (aka Peer Review) once for each phase
- These are due by the end of the week of each design review (can be done before or after the review)
- These are confedential and honesty is of the utmost importance
- Be sure to evaluate each of your team members, including yourself
- During class, you will also be asked to complete Design Review Evaluations (aka Presentation Reviews)
- These will be provided to half the class at each Design Review in paper format (see NOTEs below)
- Split your team in half, one half needs to do the Presentation Review for phases 0 and 2, the other half needs to do them for phases 1 and 3
- Those not doing the presentation review will be responsible for keeping Q&A lively and taking notes in your notebook
- Those doing the evaluation will be exempt from having notebook notes for the design review
- Those doing the evaluation will be asked to fill in the evaluation on line by 5pm on the day after the design review
- NOTE: It is YOUR TEAM's responsibility to determine what half is doing Q&A and what half is doing the evaluation. As an example if a team is made up of 5 students, including Joe, Barb, Rob, Tom, and Linda, you can choose to have Joe and Barb take notes and ask questions during the Phase 0 Review while Rob, Tom, and Linda fill out the Presentation Review forms. The responsibilities then alternate for reviews of Phases 1, 2, and 3, such that each student has one Q&A session and one Evaluation session per semester.
- NOTE: If you are taking notes and asking questions during the Design Review, your notebook will reflect that. If you are doing the Evaluation, then simply write in your notebook a brief statement, such as, "(date), Phase 0 Design Review, Did not take notes due to Presentation Review responsibilities"
- Dress Business Casual, as guests may attend, including mentors, faculty, and others from industry
- Ensure your presentations are saved in the course locker for your group and have the appropriate file name
- You have 10 minutes for each presentation, including Q&A
- Going over on time is not permitted
- A good rule will be 7-8 minute presentations and 2-3 minutes for Q&A (but can do Q&A throughout if you wish)
- The entire audience, including students not doing evaluations, will be expected to participate in a lively Q&A
- All students are expected to be in class for the entire duration of the design review
- Note that the final symposium could be as short as 5 minutes total with no Q&A depending on format of the symposium
- Your first project schedule should be completed no later than 2 weeks after the Phase 0 Review and a revised project schedule should be due on the date of each Design Review. Note that changes to the project schedule are not allowed during the middle of a phase, but your updated schedule should reflect expected changes for future phases.
