In order for BME students to gain a better understanding of the demands on physicians, dentists, and other healthcare providers, the BME department is starting a spring seminar series in which we invite speakers to give discipline-specific overviews of clinical practice. From these seminars, BME will promote closer collaborations with healthcare professionals, hope that these seminars will generate a list of potential projects for our medical device courses (senior design and graduate level) and pilot projects for research initiation. The one-hour seminars will be broken into the following three segments:
First segment:
Introduce the students to the diagnosis and treatment of patients as you see them in your clinic (perhaps the highlights of a day in your life). |
Second segment:
A focus on technologies that you employ and how these technologies influence the treatment decisions that you reach. |
Last segment:
An open discussion of new technologies (or improvements of current technology) that could advance clinical practice as you see it. During this last segment, the speaker may have an idea to explore with engineers about feasibility, or perhaps a short list of perceived technology needs that BME students and faculty might turn into new technology concepts. |
