The research and development of biosensors and instrumentation for advanced research, therapeutic, surgical, and prosthetic devices, including bioelectronics, nanotechnology, integrated circuits, robotics, & intelligent machines.
Medical Device research encompasses several research topics. Dr. Albert Banes, president of Flexcell International, develops mechanical loading devices for cultured tissues. Dr. Glenn Walker is pursuing high throughput/parallel microscale cell/tissue cultures for toxicology screening bio-microelectromechanical systems (bioMEMS), microfluidics, and lab-on-a-chip systems. Dr. Bob Dennis is involved in bioreactor design and the development of automated cell culture systems.
Dr. Henery Hsiao, Dr. Stephen Quint, and Dr. Oleg Favorov are involved in the development of instruments and sensors to improve the outcomes of surgery. Dr. Eddie Grant is developing minimally invasive robotic assistance for surgery and wearable computers. Dr. Jeffrey Macdonald is developing new metabolomic sensing technologies including and non-invasive monitoring of tumor metabolism, and metabolism response to toxic events.
Dr. Gregory McCarty is developing new micro- and nanoscale technologies
for fabricating systems for implementation in neuroscience research.
These structures are targeted to elucidate information from neurons in
the brain to gain insight into neurodegenerative diseases and addiction. Dr. Charles Finley’s primarily research lies in the design and application of Cochlear prosthesis. In recent years, Dr. Troy Nagle has been active in research projects in electronic olfaction. Finally, Dr. Rich Goldberg develops custom devices for the disabled.
